Educating Citizens at the Grassroots Level
Barakati Folk School is designed as an inclusive, non-formal learning space open to all segments of village communities. Our focus is not to replace formal education, but to complement it by fostering critical thinking, sensitivity to local environmental issues, and pride in local cultural identity.
Through participatory and fun learning methods, children and residents are guided to recognize surrounding natural resources, understand their rights as indigenous/local communities, and discuss solutions for shared environmental challenges.
Learning Curriculum
Teaching Focus
Applied curriculum developed specifically matching the environmental and cultural context of the Wolio-Buton communities.
1. Rural Literacy
Functional literacy eradication and provisioning reading houses/mobile libraries with high-quality book collections.
2. Environmental Education
Studying local ecosystems, the importance of forest conservation, proper waste disposal, and preservation of Buton coastal biodiversity.
3. Critical Consciousness & Culture
Through focus group discussions, engaging youth to recognize local history, Wolio cultural values, and ecological management rights.
Learning Methods
Learning with Nature and Citizens
The learning process is not rigid or confined to classroom walls. We utilize public open spaces and nature as interactive learning laboratories for residents.
Open Nature Classes
Conducting direct introduction of protected forest flora-fauna and beach coral reef ecosystems.
Creative Storytelling & Arts
Instilling ethical and cultural values through storytelling, drawing together, and introducing traditional dance/music.
Village Youth Forum Discussions
Encouraging youth care for social-community issues and village environmental conservation.
